Lost on Lunatic Lane

Sharn Music Review – The towers of the Middle City shook tonight with the thumping reverberations of Droaamite minstrel group known as 333 Lunatic Lane. Lead by outspoken Droaamite patriot Alain d’Tharashk, Lunatic Lane embodies the exotic power of the monstrous West. Though there can be no doubt that the thunderous four piece orc percussion crew, the haunting melodies of the harpy backing vocalists, and the lascivious writhings of the changeling dancers create a unique spectacle in a city not short on its variety of entertainments, it is the intensity of the sole human in the group that captures the ears (and hearts) of the crowd that spills into the street to witness the commotion. With songs ranging from bawdy tunes like “Hot Changeling Love Triangle,” “Grabbing The Minotaur By The Horns,” and, my personal favorite, “Maralek the Medusa (She Makes Me Hard)”…to the bar brawl inspiring “The Bigger They Are…” and “Never Cheat A Changeling”…to the controversial Droaam anthem, “I’ve Felt The Pain Of The Silver Flame,” Alain and his monstrous band have struck a chord with Sharn’s youth.

House Scion Cleared of Murder Charges

Sharn – Charges for the deaths of four Thrane clergymen were dropped today against Morgrave University student, Alain d’Tharashk. D’Tharashk, was arrested last week when the Guard responded to a disturbance that resulted in two members of the Silver Flame cut down and two others plummeting to their deaths. Several eye-witnesses, including university researcher Bucklin Finn, attested that the accused was acting in self-defense. Finn testified that, “the four approached the thin guy asking if he was who he was, cause he’s famous and all so he probably gets that a lot, and then they tried to grab him. Before I could get over to break it up, he, yes the thin guy, had zapped a couple of them pretty good and they were twitching like fresh fish. The two others rushed him and he scrambled back to the railing. When they tackled him, he pivoted and all three of them went over the edge. I ran to look over after them and, as I saw them fall away into the night mist, the damn thin guy is standing next to me. Bastard signed me an autograph while waiting for the guard. D’Tharashk’s lawyer, the “honorable” Jack Holiday, said his client had, “No Comment.”

From the files of Sharn’s Guardians of the Gate

It is rumored that Alain left school two years prior to the end of the War when word from Droaam was that three members of a Droaamite werewolf pack had been captured by inquisitors of the Silver Flame and were sentenced to be burned at the stake. Information supports that this execution was disrupted but details are scarce and the Church denies these rumors of barbarism. Two months later Alain was the leading officer in a small band of Liondrake’s Roar mercenaries (orcs, weretouched, and a few gnolls) sent against Thrane while flying the colors of Cyre. He distinguished himself and rose through the ranks as the War came to its punctuated close.

Allegations, Rumors, and Half Truths

Alain has a long list of romantic conquests, that include Sharn’s noble scions and an exhaustive study of monstrous humanoids. He brought a medusa as a date to a university ball and then wrote a song about it. He learned magic from a member of a werewolf pack. 333 Lunatic Lane is courting him for a reunion tour. House Medani has engaged him in a group that hunts down war criminals where he has furthered his arcane training

Deeper Bio

Alain is a scion of the Velderan family, one of the three primary families that make up House Tharaschk. He is the younger brother of clan leader, Daric Velderan. Raised in Graywall, Droaam, Alain grew up as a human minority. His place in the House, his precocious demeanor as a child, and his noteworthy intellect drew much attention his way at a young age. Like many among the dragonmark houses’ elite, Alain had the best mentors available and rubbed elbows with his nation’s notables. The difference in upbringing was that, his mentors were beings that most of Khorvaire consider monsters.

Alain was taught history by Xor’chylic, the illithid governor of Graywall. It was he who recognized Alain’s potential for magic and Alain suspects that the ancient mindflayer may have psionically influenced the path that his mind has developed down. At the governor’s suggestion, Alain was sent to Cazhaak Draal where he was taught the subtleties of diplomacy that can only exist in a court where looks can literally kill. He learned music from the mouths of harpies and apprenticed under the oni, Drul Kantar. His first love was a she-wolf of the Dark Pack he met at Sheshka’s court and he has been introduced to the Sisters of Sora Kell in their lair on the Great Crag. In many ways, through many hands, Alain Velderan is the Son of Droaam.

The choice for him to school in Breland rather than another country with a stronger arcane tradition was one based on the needs of Droaam to build ties with its direct neighbor. In bringing his music to Sharn, Alain gave Droaam a voice that spoke of a passionate people driven towards unity despite racial diversity, a voice that Khorvaire’s youth connected to in their growing distaste for the war between the Five Nations and its implications for their future. Using House Sivis’ speaking stones, Alain’s music was relayed across the continent. While in school, Alain honed his martial and magical skills until the line between them blurred. Where others would practice through repetition, he would meditate on each lesson, teasing out each nuance until he understood the why and the timing of each motion and where the blade needed to be to let the natural movement of his opponents do the work for him.

Two years prior to graduation, Alain received word that the Silver Flame’s Inquisition, allegedly a thing of the past, had captured a pack Droaamite were mercenaries working for Aundair. The pack was to be burned at the stake in a public square in a backwater village. Backed by members of the Dark Pack, orcs, and gnolls, Alain raced to the village and offered the officer in command, Thrazden of Thrane, ransom for the captives. When he was refused, Alain calmly described for the crowd how their fear was driving them to the barbarism that they attribute to those they deem their enemies and how they should require their leaders to be merciful and mercy would find them in return. No voice was brave enough to challenge Thrazden. With a nod, Alain’s waves of arcane energy seared through the assembled. Dopplegangers emerged throughout the crowd, cutting down the unsuspecting. Gnoll-launched arrows cut down the running. In less than ten minutes, Alain stood before Thrazden and his remaining guard in the square. “I would like my people now please”. “Allow me to show you the mercy you seem to be incapable of”.

After returning to Sharn, his steps were constantly harried, culminating in the death several clergy of Thrane during an attempted abduction. It was at this point that he returned to Droaam and became deeply involved in the deployment of the Liondrake’s Roar during the last throws of the last war. Units under his command became known for brutal efficiency, pre-battle revelry, and camaraderie with their hosting army. Alain made sure that their hosts connected to the fact that his soldiers left families at home and that they were not as different as their appearances would imply.

In the last two years, Alain has been recruited into a House Medani project searching out war criminals. This has led to forays into Karrnath, Thrane, Darguun, and the Pirate Kingdom.
